Why struvite crystals form, and how diet and hydration support urinary wellness.
Urinary health may not be top of mind when choosing food for a dog or cat, but for many animals, it’s a daily battleground. Among the most common issues? Struvite crystals—microscopic, jagged structures that can cause painful urination, recurring infections, and, in some cases, life-threatening blockages.
This issue is of particular interest to us as we’ve developed a plant-based food designed for companion animals, and urinary health was central to that formulation. Some guardians and veterinarians express concern that plant-based diets might increase the risk of struvite formation by raising urine pH. The scientific reality, however, is more nuanced—and far more hopeful.
What are struvite crystals?
Struvites are composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate, and they typically form in alkaline urine (above pH 7). When conditions are right, these components crystallize into sharp-edged grains, and over time, may grow into stones.
They are among the most common urinary tract stones in both dogs and cats—accounting for up to 50% of urolith cases in dogs, and about 40–45% in cats. In dogs, struvite formation is often linked to urinary tract infections (especially with Staphylococcus and Proteus species, which produce urease and raise urine pH). In cats, the majority of struvite cases are sterile, meaning no infection is involved and other factors—like diet, hydration, and genetics—play a more central role.
Signs and symptoms
Struvite-related symptoms can be subtle or severe. They may include:
- Increased frequency of urination
- Straining or vocalizing during urination
- Blood in the urine
- Licking of the genital area
- Urinating outside the litter box (in cats)
- Reduced appetite or lethargy
In male cats, struvites can lead to complete urinary obstruction, which is a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Diagnosis typically involves urinalysis (for pH and crystal identification), imaging (ultrasound or X-ray), and possibly urine culture.
Why urine pH matters
Urine pH is a key variable in struvite formation. More acidic urine (pH 6.0–6.5) tends to inhibit struvite crystallization, while alkaline urine (above pH 7.0) promotes it.
Dogs and cats naturally produce more acidic urine due to their evolutionary diets, which were high in animal protein. This has led to a common belief that plant-based diets—which can be lower in sulfur-containing amino acids—may produce more alkaline urine and thus increase struvite risk.
But evidence from recent studies challenges that assumption.A 2023 controlled study led by Dr. Sarah Dodd, BVSc, MSc, PhD, DECVCN, compared dogs fed a commercial plant-based diet to those on a conventional meat-based diet. The researchers found no statistically significant difference in urine pH between the two groups. Emerging studies in cats are more limited but suggest similar trends. The takeaway? When diets are nutritionally complete and properly formulated, plant ingredients do not inherently alter urinary pH.
How diet influences struvite formation
Struvite risk is not just about pH—it’s the result of multiple interrelated dietary factors. Effective urinary health diets, whether meat- or plant-based, typically address:
Controlled mineral content
High levels of magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium can increase the likelihood of crystallization. Although no maximum limits are established in AAFCO nutrient profiles, veterinary therapeutic diets designed for urinary health often keep:
- Magnesium below 0.1% (dry matter)
- Phosphorus between 0.3–0.7% (dry matter)
- A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately 1:1 to 1.5:1
These targets minimize supersaturation of struvite-forming minerals without compromising essential nutrient intake.
Urinary acidifiers
One key tool for moderating pH is DL-methionine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. Methionine metabolism yields sulfate, which lowers urinary pH. Supplementation with methionine is a standard strategy in many veterinary urinary diets—and especially important in diets where methionine content from whole foods may vary.
Moisture content
Hydration plays a crucial, often overlooked role. Dilute urine reduces the concentration of minerals and helps flush out crystals before they can coalesce. This is why moist diets (like canned or gently rehydrated food) are often recommended for animals with a history of urinary issues.
In one clinical study, cats who were switched from dry food to wet food experienced more than a 50% reduction in the recurrence of lower urinary tract signs.
The plant-based diet question
The concern around plant-based diets and urinary health is understandable, especially given the lack of long-term studies until recently. But the growing body of veterinary nutrition research paints a reassuring picture.
In addition to the urine pH data noted earlier, long-term observational studies (including those by Dr. Andrew Knight and colleagues) have shown that dogs and cats fed well-formulated vegan diets maintain normal kidney and urinary function, with no increased incidence of urinary tract issues compared to conventionally fed counterparts.Of course, not all plant-based diets are created equal. Just as with meat-based diets, nutritional adequacy, proper formulation, and quality control are essential.
What can guardians do?
For those concerned about urinary health, here are evidence-based recommendations:
- Feed a complete and balanced diet formulated to meet AAFCO standards
- Prioritize moisture—wet food or added water can make a meaningful difference
- Watch for signs of urinary distress, especially in male cats or dogs with prior episodes
- Consult your veterinarian if you suspect any issue; they may recommend urinalysis, imaging, or dietary modification
If a pet has a history of struvites, a therapeutic urinary diet may be prescribed—these are typically lower in magnesium and phosphorus and include urinary acidifiers like methionine.
The bottom line
Struvite formation is a multifactorial process influenced by urine pH, mineral balance, hydration, and overall metabolic health. While alkaline urine is a known risk factor, it’s inaccurate to assume that plant-based diets automatically push urine pH into dangerous territory.
Well-formulated, complete plant-based diets—especially those that include methionine, controlled mineral levels, and ample moisture—can support urinary health as effectively as meat-based ones. What matters most isn’t the presence or absence of meat, but whether the food is scientifically designed with the animal’s physiology in mind.
