“Sustainable” is not a regulated term in pet food. Any brand can use it, and most do — which puts the burden on you, the reader, to know what to look for.
This guide gives you that framework. Four measurable dimensions of sustainable dog food: protein source carbon footprint, supply chain traceability, packaging and shipping emissions, and manufacturing standards. A brand can perform brilliantly on one and badly on the others. The brands that win on all four are rare, and the math behind why is more interesting than the marketing language suggests.

What does “sustainable dog food” actually mean
The pet food industry has gotten very good at sustainability language and considerably less good at sustainability measurement. “Eco-friendly,” “ethically sourced,” “low-impact” — none of these phrases mean anything without a defined metric behind them.
Four dimensions matter, and they’re the ones independent researchers use when they study pet food’s environmental footprint:
Protein source carbon footprint. The largest single driver of pet food emissions, by a margin that surprises most people. The most-cited lifecycle dataset, Poore and Nemecek’s 2018 Science analysis of 38,000 farms across 119 countries, puts beef at roughly 60 times the greenhouse gas emissions of peas per 100 grams of protein, and dedicated beef herds at over 100 times. Chicken and fish sit in between but are still 10 to 25 times higher than legumes. This is the biggest lever in the entire conversation.
Ingredient supply chain traceability. Can the brand tell you where the ingredients came from; the farm, the country, the harvest year? Traceability is the precondition for any other ethical claim. A brand that can’t tell you where their chicken was raised has nothing to say about how it was raised.
Packaging and shipping emissions. Every product carries packaging and shipping emissions; the question is how efficiently the format handles them. Frozen home delivery is the worst case with cooler insulation, dry ice replenishment, and frequent cold-chain shipments. Shelf-stable cartons sit at the other end — no cold chain, lighter materials than steel cans, and rectangular geometry that packs more efficiently on a pallet. We unpack the specifics below.
Manufacturing standards and waste reduction. What facility makes the food, what regulatory authority oversees it, and what happens to the byproducts. Manufacturing facilities for human foods operate under materially stricter rules than the parallel feed-grade standards most pet food production is held to. Feed-grade exempts manufacturers from allergen preventive controls. It permits feed-grade ingredients with mold and damage levels that would fail human-food grading. It carries no federally mandated mycotoxin limits and minimal enforcement testing. And it has historically allowed, under FDA enforcement discretion, material from animals that died other than by slaughter to enter the rendering supply chain that feeds the lowest tiers of pet food. None of those carve-outs apply at human food facilities.
These four dimensions don’t carry equal weight. Protein source is the dominant lever by an order of magnitude — a brand built on animal proteins starts with a footprint many times higher than a plant-based brand, and no amount of recyclable packaging, supply chain proximity, or manufacturing standards closes that gap. The other three dimensions matter most as compounding factors on top of the underlying protein choice, and as the way to compare brands within the same protein category. There are brands that win on all four, but they have to start with the right one.
Protein source and environmental impact:
the biggest lever

If you read only one section of this article, read this one. The protein you choose for your dog has more impact on the environment than any other decision you make in choosing your pet food..
The foundational study is Okin (2017) in PLOS One: Environmental impacts of food consumption by dogs and cats. Gregory Okin, a UCLA geography professor, calculated that pet food production in the United States is responsible for approximately 64 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions per year — comparable to the annual emissions of roughly 13.6 million cars. In Okin’s analysis, pet food production accounts for 25 to 30 percent of animal-product consumption in the US.
The carbon footprint by protein category, ranked from highest to lowest lifecycle emissions:
Beef. Lamb. Pork. Chicken. Fish. Insect. Plant protein.
The gaps between those categories aren’t small. Poore and Nemecek’s 2018 Science analysis — the most-cited lifecycle assessment in the sustainable food literature — places beef at roughly 60 times the GHG footprint of peas per 100 grams of protein on the median, and over 100 times higher for dedicated beef herds. Chicken sits at roughly 25 times pea protein. Farmed fish at roughly 15 times. Insect protein is in the same order of magnitude as plant protein but remains niche in the US market. Ruminants such as cows and sheep produce methane during digestion; and the slaughter and processing of any animal sits on top of the upstream feed crop emissions.
A 2023 follow-up study by Professor Andrew Knight at the University of Winchester (now Griffith University), also in PLOS One, modeled what would happen if dogs and cats were fed nutritionally sound plant-based diets at scale. Knight’s projection: if the world’s household dogs went vegan, the resulting greenhouse gas reduction would exceed the entire annual emissions of the United Kingdom. For cats, the comparable reduction would exceed New Zealand’s. The freshwater savings and land-use reductions are on similar scales.
One wrinkle worth flagging for guardians shopping in the premium wet category specifically: wet dog food is typically more meat-heavy than kibble. The moisture, palatability, and “meat-first” positioning that drive the wet category come from higher animal-protein percentages by formulation; kibble leans more heavily on grains and starches as carriers, while wet food’s value proposition is built on meat content. Which means the guardian who chooses wet for the moisture and the premium nutrition is also, in most cases, buying into the protein category that carries the highest environmental cost. That trade-off is structural in conventional wet pet food. Plant-based wet food is the only configuration that delivers moisture-rich, premium nutrition without the meat-heavy carbon footprint that defines the rest of the category.

A note on language: “humanely raised” as a sourcing credential describes a slaughter-based supply chain. Plant proteins don’t have a slaughter step at all. Both can be true.

When you evaluate any brand’s sourcing claims, third-party signals matter more than the brand’s own language. AAFCO Human Grade Pet Food Standard compliance. FDA-registered human-food facility. Board-certified veterinary nutritionist on the formulation team (Dipl. ACVN or Dipl. ECVCN). Third-party nutrient panel testing against the full AAFCO panel. Look for those.
Packaging and cold chain logistics

This is the category most readers haven’t thought about, and it’s where the “fresh” delivery dog food boom has hidden a substantial emissions cost behind a clean-eating aesthetic.
Refrigerated home delivery — the model used by Farmer’s Dog, Ollie, NomNom, and similar frozen subscription brands — requires cold chain logistics from end to end. Refrigerated warehousing. Refrigerated trucking. Insulated last-mile shipping with dry ice or gel packs. Extra insulation in the packaging that may not be recyclable in some US municipalities. Weekly or biweekly delivery cadence with each delivery carrying the full cold chain footprint.
Compare that to a shelf-stable product. No refrigeration at the warehouse. Standard ambient shipping. No insulation. No dry ice. A single delivery potentially covers weeks or months of meals. The per-meal emissions delta is substantial, and largely uncovered because the brands competing on frozen have a vested interest in not surfacing it.
The package itself matters too. Within shelf-stable wet food, the carton format is significantly more efficient than the steel can that has historically dominated the category. Two design features do most of the work. First, rectangular geometry: a Tetra Recart carton packs onto a pallet with 10 to 20 percent more product per load than round cans, because cylinders waste space between them and rectangles don’t. Second, weight: a carton is roughly 96 percent product to 4 percent packaging by weight, compared to a steel can’s much heavier metal shell — less freight mass per meal delivered. Empty cartons ship flat to the filling line at roughly nine-to-one efficiency against pre-formed cans. Tetra Pak’s published lifecycle assessment puts a Tetra Recart carton at roughly 85 percent lower carbon footprint than an equivalent steel can across the full cycle.

None of this is an attack on the frozen category. The point is that the sustainability story of “fresh” delivery is more complicated than the marketing implies.

Is vegan dog food actually more sustainable
Short answer: yes, on protein source carbon footprint and supply chain simplicity. Vegan diets built on plant proteins have a fraction of the lifecycle emissions of cows, chicken, or fish, and the supply chain is structurally shorter and more auditable.
The longer answer has nuance. Sustainability is multi-dimensional — but the dimensions don’t compete on equal footing. Protein source dominates the lifecycle footprint so completely that no plausible packaging or logistics decisions on a plant-based brand could close the gap with a meat-based competitor. The other dimensions decide rankings within a protein category, not across them.
