Plant-based nutrition for dogs and cats
For years, conventional wisdom claimed that cats and dogs needed animal protein to thrive. But the science tells a different story. What truly matters isn’t whether an ingredient is animal- or plant-based, it’s whether the diet delivers the essential nutrients in the correct amounts. Formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Sarah Dodd, our recipes are intentionally high in protein, providing more protein than many conventional pet foods through carefully selected plant ingredients chosen for their bioavailability and amino acid profiles. Recent peer-reviewed studies have compared dogs and cats fed nutritionally complete, plant-based diets with those on conventional meat-based diets. The findings? No health deficits in the plant-based groups—and in some key health metrics, including longevity, notable improvements.

Powerful, plant-based protein that fuels strength and health
Our high-protein recipes are built from a spectrum of functional, whole-food ingredients — each selected for its unique contributions to canine health.
Vital wheat gluten is a concentrated, highly digestible protein source whose amino acid profile closely mirrors that of meat. It’s rich in glutamic acid, proline, and leucine — supporting muscle maintenance and normal metabolic function. It also delivers a robust supply of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) — leucine, isoleucine, and valine — essential for preserving lean muscle and fueling activity. Uncommonly for a plant protein, it’s particularly high in methionine, which supports normal skin integrity and urinary tract function.
Pea protein and fresh green peas supply lysine, a key amino acid often limited in plant-based diets, supporting immune function.
Nutritional yeast contributes both protein and B vitamins — including B12 and niacin — which support energy metabolism, neurological health, and appetite appeal with its natural umami richness.
Sweet potatoes and spinach round out the profile with small but valuable protein contributions alongside phytonutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that support healthy digestion and normal cellular function.
Together, these ingredients provide a complete and balanced amino acid profile that supports muscle maintenance, skin and coat health, hormone and enzyme production, and lifelong vitality.
Protein with purpose — precisely formulated to help your dog thrive.
Essential fatty acids are vital for skin, coat, brain and immune system
Our recipes deliver essential fatty acids in abundance from whole-food, plant-based sources. Coconut oil provides medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) like lauric acid and capric acid, which are easily metabolized for quick energy.
Olive oil contributes primarily monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid, known to support cardiovascular health, reduce oxidative stress, and support normal inflammatory response.
Pumpkin puree and peas contribute omega-6 fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, essential for maintaining a glossy coat, strong skin barrier, and proper inflammatory response. Spinach, nutritional yeast, and dried beet add trace amounts of omega-3s, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — a precursor to EPA and DHA — to help balance inflammation and support cellular function.
Our formulation is also low in saturated long-chain fats and completely free of cholesterol, which aligns with current thinking on heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory nutrition. The result is a carefully balanced fat profile that provides energy, improves nutrient absorption, supports hormone production, and helps your dog look and feel their best — from nose to tail.
Vitamins are micronutrient powerhouses behind cellular function
Spinach, carrots, pumpkin, and apples provide a spectrum of provitamin A carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lutein, which support vision, immune function, and healthy skin.
Nutritional yeast is a standout source of B vitamins, including B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, and B12, essential for nervous system health, red blood cell production, and efficient energy metabolism.
Sweet potatoes and beet powder offer vitamin C and plant-based antioxidants that provide antioxidant support for normal cellular function.
Kelp delivers small but vital amounts of vitamin K, important for blood clotting and bone mineralization.
Our custom vitamin premix ensures consistent, bioavailable levels of critical nutrients including vitamin D2, vitamin E, folic acid, biotin, and choline. Every bite delivers essential vitamins in bioavailable forms — supporting normal immune function, growth, neurological health for each life stage.
Minerals are the structural and biochemical backbone of health
Critical for bones, nerves, hydration, enzyme function, and more, our formula combines whole-food ingredients and precision supplementation to ensure every mineral is present in optimal, bioavailable form.
Kelp provides a natural source of iodine, essential for healthy thyroid function and metabolic regulation. Spinach and sweet potatoes offer plant-based magnesium, iron, and potassium, which support muscle function, oxygen transport, and nerve signaling.
Sustainably harvested marine algae delivers highly bioavailable calcium, supporting strong bones, teeth, and cellular signaling.
We carefully supplement with zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese — trace minerals vital for antioxidant defense, connective tissue repair, immune health, and enzymatic activity. Dicalcium phosphate balances our calcium:phosphorus ratio for optimal skeletal support, while choline chloride supports liver function and cellular structure.
Every mineral in our recipe is selected, balanced, and calibrated for lifelong vitality — without relying on animal sources.
Digestive health is foundational to whole-body health
Fiber does more than just keep things moving. Our formula includes a diverse array of whole plant ingredients that provide both soluble and insoluble fibers, along with a spectrum of phytonutrients that nourish the gut microbiome and support normal immune function.
Pumpkin puree, carrots, and apples are rich in soluble fiber, which supports healthy digestion, consistent energy levels, and feeds beneficial gut bacteria.
Sweet potatoes, peas, and spinach contribute insoluble fiber, which promotes healthy stool formation, and supports normal elimination and regularity.
Beet powder adds fermentable fiber that produces short-chain fatty acids — key fuel for the cells lining the colon.
And across the formula, richly pigmented plants like spinach, carrots, and beets deliver phytonutrients like lutein, beta-carotene, and polyphenols, which act as antioxidants that support normal cellular function.
This strategic blend of fiber and functional plant compounds supports digestive comfort, nutrient absorption, immune readiness, and long-term wellness — naturally.

Vegan food for dogs and cats
Nutrition built on science
Formulated by a Board-certified Veterinary Nutritionist, Dr. Sarah Dodd, our foods have more protein — from plant-sources chosen for their bioavailability and amino acid profiles — than many conventional foods. Our foods have the ideal protein, fat and fiber levels for both cats and dogs, not just the minimums required and, we think it’s a big part of why cats and dogs find our foods so delicious!
Whole food sources
Minimally processed ingredients
By the time many conventional foods reach a bowl, some ingredients may have been exposed to four or more high-heat or chemical processes. Each step can degrade nutrients and may even generate harmful compounds like carcinogens. At Virtuous Vittles®, we do things differently. We use retort canning— an efficient cooking and sterilization process— to prepare our recipes. This ensures your furry friend receives optimal nutrition from our fresh, whole ingredients, water-processed protein flours and vitamins from plants.

Feeding guidelines for cats and dogs
From first sniff to final lick, Virtuous Vittles foods are made to be delicious
Most dogs and cats can switch to Virtuous Vittles immediately or within a few days, but if your furry friend has a sensitive stomach or a history of dietary upsets, you may want to stretch the transition to 10–14 days, increasing the new food by approximately 20-25 % every three days. Always keep fresh water available.

Dogs are omnivores
Dogs are omnivores, and their digestive systems and nutrient requirements have evolved alongside humans for tens of millenia. In fact, diets too high in animal products, such as faddish “carnivore diets,” may actually cause disease. Genetic comparisons of modern domesticated dogs to their wolf ancestors reveal significant changes in nutrient requirements and ability to digest and use starches. In fact, domesticated dogs have many copies of the the gene for starch digestion (just like humans) while wolves have only two.
Cats are carnivores... in the wild
While it’s true that lions living in the wilds of Tanzania probably couldn’t figure out how to feed themselves an exclusively plant-based diet, our kitties at home have access to a much different set of resources. With our help — and the abundance of healthy plant proteins — cats can get all the amino acids and nutrients they need. Additionally, there’s nothing “natural” about conventional kitty foods. They often contain very little whole meat, and instead consist of highly rendered and processed animal parts plus low-cost carbohydrates and supplements. Not exactly what our friend on the savannah would be eating.
Carefully prepared and sealed for safety —and sustainability
We use retort cooking —a gentle, steam-based process that locks in nutrients while keeping meals shelf-stable without any artificial preservatives. This method allows us to deliver fresh, wholesome meals that are safe, delicious, and packed with nutrition —no refrigeration needed (until opened), and no compromise on quality.
We wouldn’t be Good for Every Living Being®, if we didn’t consider sustainability carefully in every choice we make, from ingredients to packaging. Our meals are packaged in Tetra Pak® cartons, which are 70% paper-based, BPA-free, and recyclable in most U.S. municipalities. Check here to see if they are recyclable in yours. Compared to traditional cans or glass jars, Tetra Paks are dramatically lighter and more space efficient, allowing for huge savings in transportation emissions.
